Woodview Manor Parents Council
The Woodview Manor Parents’ Council (WMPC) is comprised of parents representing the various groups served by Woodview Manor. The Council was established to build on and support the Manor’s efforts to provide quality programs for individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
The WMPC’s goal is to develop and implement strategies, with support from all parents associated with the Manor, to raise awareness of the Manor within the community and to advocate for necessary funding and support to continue its unique and beneficial programs.
Key Roles for the Council:
- Advocate for funding, for our children’s citizenship and for better ODSP supports
- Raise Woodview Manor’s profile in the community
- Partner in fundraising efforts for Manor programs
- Fundraise specifically to develop housing options
- Act as an advisory group to Manor administration/staff
- Provide opportunities for parents to network
- Support ways for parents to learn about and understand autism
Successes:
- Presented and hosted parent information events with speakers such as Dr. Peter Szatmari and Dr. Susan Bryson
- Assisted in presenting the Stages of Autism: Adolescence & Beyond Conferences held every two years (2006, 2008, 2010)
- Assisted in production of “The Sundial”, Woodview Manor’s quarterly publication
- Developed and presented the WMPC’s views on Bill 77 (Services for Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act, 2008)
- Reviewed the direction of MPD and its future plans
- Reviewed the Manor’s website and contributed ideas for its redesign
- Explored and established new fundraising possibilities, e.g. Manor Club
- Review current Ministry funding policies and discussed potential strategies for approaching local and regional representatives
- Met with Ministry officials in regard to funding issues
Ongoing Roles:
- Develop and expand social and fundraising opportunities for the future (Annual Winterlude Dinner and Dance )
- Assist in production of “The Sundial”, Woodview Manor’s quarterly newsletter
- Assist in presentation of Annual Casino Night Fundraiser
